Hair Braiding in Salt Lake City — Protective, Precise, Scalp-Safe
Braids should protect your hair, not punish your edges. At Rhys Hair Loft in Murray, we braid textured hair with clean parts, even tension, and a scalp-first approach — braiding that lasts, looks intentional, and keeps your natural hair growing underneath. As a Black-owned salon, braiding textured and African hair is at the heart of what we do, and our braiders serve the whole Salt Lake City valley. Every braid service includes shampoo, deep conditioning, scalp oil, setting products, and drying, and most styles include natural-color braiding hair (specialty and human hair available in-salon).
Braid styles we offer
- Knotless & box braids — from jumbo to extra-small, lengths up to 30". Gentler on the scalp with a seamless start. See the dedicated knotless braids page →
- Boho braids — knotless braids and bobs with curly synthetic or human-hair pieces.
- Cornrows & feed-in braids — straight-backs, feed-ins, braided ponytails, and designs.
- Twists — kinky twists and two-strand sponge twists, with or without added hair.
- Tribal braids — cornrows in front paired with box braids, boho knotless, twists, or a sew-in in the back.
- Faux locs & butterfly locs — protective loc-look styles without permanent commitment.
- Fishbones, crochet & custom styles — including custom braids quoted from your inspiration photo.
- Men's & boys' braids — cornrows, straight-backs, box braids, and twists for men and boys.
- Kids' braids — gentle braiding for children (medium knotless box braids for ages 7–10).
Braiding that protects your edges
Tension is everything. Braids that are too tight cause traction damage and thinning at the hairline — the exact problem we work to prevent. Our braiders keep tension even and scalp-safe, and we're honest if a style you want isn't right for your hairline's health. We also offer low-tension box braid options. For clients already dealing with thinning edges, we pair braiding with scalp & trichology care.

FAQ
How long do box braids and knotless braids last? With good care, most braid sets last 4 to 8 weeks. Knotless braids are gentler on the scalp at the start. Sleeping in a satin bonnet and keeping your scalp clean extends wear.
Which braids are best if I'm worried about my edges? Knotless braids, low-tension box braids, and properly sized, even-tension styles are the safest for fragile hairlines. We keep tension scalp-safe and will tell you honestly if a style risks your edges.
Do you do African hair braiding? Yes. As a Black-owned salon, braiding textured and African hair is our specialty — knotless and box braids, cornrows and feed-ins, tribal braids, twists, and faux locs, all installed with scalp-safe tension. Book a consultation and we'll plan the style and size for your hair.
Do you braid men's and boys' hair? Yes. We braid men and boys — cornrows, straight-backs, box braids, and twists — with the same clean parting and even tension as every braid service. Book online or reach out and we'll match you with the right braider.
Do you braid children's hair? Yes. We offer gentle braiding for children — including medium knotless box braids for ages 7 to 10 — with lower tension and age-appropriate sessions.
Is braiding hair included in the price? Natural-color braiding hair is included in most styles. Specialty braiding hair and human hair are available to purchase in-salon. A few styles list hair separately — the booking page notes which.
Do braids help my hair grow? Braids are a protective style — they protect your ends and reduce daily manipulation, which supports length retention. Growth still depends on scalp health and gentle tension, which is why our approach is scalp-first.
